Politecnico di Milano study: Only 20% of Italian firms conduct continuous supply chain risk monitoring

A study by the Supply Chain Planning Observatory at Politecnico di Milano reveals that while 96% of Italian companies monitor supply chain risks, only 20% perform continuous and systematic checks through automated alerts and frequent updates.

Key concerns for businesses include geopolitical instability and tariffs (65%), fluctuations in demand (57%), and logistics flow disruptions (49%). To manage this uncertainty, 80% of companies are focusing on strengthening simulation and scenario analysis skills. Common mitigation strategies include seeking alternative suppliers (62%), diversifying supply sources (59%), revising inventory management policies (54%), and increasing production flexibility (45%).

Regarding technology, the application of Artificial Intelligence in supply chain planning is in its early stages. While 48% of companies have started pilot projects, only 25% have an active, fully operational AI project, largely due to a lack of internal expertise. Currently, 65% of companies report no significant impact from AI on corporate roles.
