Politehnica University of Timișoara names sports hall after former rector Viorel Șerban

The Politehnica University of Timișoara (UPT) has officially named its sports hall on Calea Ghirodei after former rector Viorel Șerban. The naming initiative was proposed by the current rector, Florin Drăgan, as a gesture of gratitude for Șerban’s contributions to the university’s development during his tenure from 2012 to 2020.

The commemorative plaque was unveiled on Sunday, October 18, a date that would have marked Șerban’s 72nd birthday. To honor his memory and his belief in the importance of sports for youth development, the university organized the ‘Viorel-Aurel Șerban Memorial’ handball tournament for children and juniors at the facility.

During the ceremony, UPT Senate President Liviu Cădariu-Brăiloiu emphasized the importance of preserving the university’s spirit and honoring those who shaped its history. Dan Șerban, a professor at UPT and son of the late rector, expressed gratitude to the community for keeping his father’s memory alive through this tribute.
