Political candidates face attacks in Paraguay and Peru
Incidents of violence targeting political figures and campaign activities have been reported in Paraguay and Peru.
In Yasy Cañy, Paraguay, Julio Vera, a mayoral candidate for the Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR), condemned the attack and arson of a vehicle belonging to journalist César Candia. Vera described the incident as “grave and without any justification” and demanded a full investigation. He also denied local rumors attempting to link him to the attack, characterizing them as malicious attempts to discredit him ahead of the elections.
In Yanahuara, Peru, an explosive device was thrown at the campaign headquarters of Renovación Popular mayoral candidate Henry Arista. The grenade failed to detonate because the safety pin was still intact. Local police and the Explosive Deactivation Unit (UDEX) secured the device. Arista reported that a potentially threatening letter was found alongside the grenade and noted that security footage may show a person dressed as a delivery worker near the scene. Arista stated he had not received prior threats but suggested the incident could be linked to campaign tensions.
