Political debates emerge in Honduras and Chile over mandates and illiberalism

In Honduras, Liberal Party deputy Iroshka Elvir has proposed a presidential recall referendum mechanism. The initiative would allow citizens to vote on whether a president should remain in office if they are deemed to have failed to uphold their constitutional mandate. Elvir stated the proposal aims to strengthen citizen control and political accountability, citing recent scandals involving alleged advisor and financier Fernando Cerimedo and President Nasry Asfura as catalysts for the debate.

In Chile, political discussions have resurfaced regarding the concept of illiberalism following debates over security constitutional reforms proposed by President José Antonio Kast's government. Academic Alfredo Joignant notes that illiberalism describes a state where electoral democracy exists, but constitutional liberalism—such as the separation of powers, judicial independence, and individual freedoms—is weakened. Joignant warns that this process often occurs gradually rather than through abrupt institutional ruptures.
