Political debates emerge over housing regulations in Porto and Mariana
In Porto, Portugal, the CDU has criticized the Municipal Chamber and the PS for their handling of the Inclusive Zoning regulation. The CDU claims the current framework has proven ineffective at curbing real estate speculation and rising housing costs. They have proposed revising the regulation to expand its scope across the entire city, conditioning private investment on permanent housing targets and controlled costs as defined by the Municipal Housing Charter.
In Mariana, Brazil, a legislative proposal introduced by councilman Manoel Douglas Soares de Oliveira, known as Preto do Cabanas, seeks to prohibit the construction and adaptation of properties for worker housing within the urban areas of the city and its districts. The proposal defines worker housing as collective accommodations for more than five unrelated workers funded by employers. Exceptions may be granted in urban expansion areas provided they meet specific infrastructure criteria and receive executive approval.
