Political developments emerge in The Gambia ahead of 2026 elections
Political activity is intensifying in The Gambia as various factions prepare for the upcoming presidential elections. Former President Yahya Jammeh, currently in exile in Equatorial Guinea, has selected Almameh Gibba, a National Assembly Member from Foni Kansala, to lead the APRC No to Alliance Movement for the December 5, 2026, election.
Gibba’s selection is viewed as a strategic move to consolidate Jammeh’s ideological base. Gibba has been a central figure in polarizing debates regarding tradition and law, notably through his efforts to challenge the 2015 ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) by arguing it should be a matter of cultural and religious choice.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Member Abdoulie Ceesay has voiced support for President Adama Barrow, defending the administration’s development record. During a Meet the People Tour, Ceesay argued that government investments are being distributed nationwide and praised the administration’s transparency regarding the national budget. He urged continued support for Barrow’s re-election while calling for the fulfillment of specific local promises, such as the construction of a hospital in Old Yundum.
