TRNC unveils 'Hedef 2033' vision and undersea gas pipeline plans

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has unveiled its 'Hedef 2033' development vision, a collaborative framework with Türkiye aimed at significant infrastructure and social improvements. TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that the plan targets a 50% reduction in energy costs through new electricity interconnections and a natural gas pipeline project with Türkiye. Other key objectives include the construction of 15,000 social housing units, the resumption of Cyprus Turkish Airlines flights by 2028, and the implementation of a General Health Insurance system by 2027.

To support these energy goals, Türkiye has deployed the seismic research vessel Oruç Reis to survey a 101-kilometer undersea natural gas pipeline route connecting the Turkish mainland to Northern Cyprus. The project, expected to be completed by 2028, aims to secure domestic energy for the TRNC and potentially serve as a transit route for gas exports to Europe.

However, the project has drawn opposition from the Greek Cypriot administration. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos stated that the planned pipeline constitutes a violation of sovereignty and international law, an issue the administration intends to raise within the European Union.
