Political disputes rise in Basque Country and Navarre over terrorism and historical symbols

Political tensions are rising in the Basque Country and Navarre regarding the commemoration of terrorism and historical symbols. The Collective of Victims of Terrorism (COVITE) has reported 33 specific acts of support for incarcerated terrorists during summer patron saint festivals in these regions. According to COVITE, these acts include rallies, tributes, and the labeling of ETA members as ‘political prisoners,’ often occurring in municipalities governed by EH Bildu.

Simultaneously, a legal dispute has emerged in Navarre involving the UPN party, which has filed an appeal with the High Court of Justice of Navarre. The appeal challenges the reduction of protection for the ‘Monumento a los Caídos.’ Critics argue this judicial offensive is an attempt to preserve symbols of the dictatorship through administrative law, while proponents of the monument's re-signification argue that human rights and the dignity of victims should take precedence over heritage cataloging.
