Political isolation of populist parties faces challenges in Romania

The concept of the ‘cordon sanitaire’—a political mechanism intended to isolate radical or populist parties from governance and decision-making—is facing increasing challenges in Europe and specifically in Romania.

In Romania, political analysts and lawmakers have noted that the boundaries between systemic parties and anti-system movements are becoming blurred. While parties like the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) previously promoted a policy of isolation regarding the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), critics argue this isolation is often inconsistent.

Senator Daniel Zamfir has characterized the idea of a strict cordon sanitaire as a political myth, pointing to instances where political opponents have collaborated with AUR when interests aligned. For example, in 2021, USR and AUR collaborated on a motion of censure against the Florin Cîțu government. This trend reflects a broader European pattern where traditional democratic parties are increasingly engaging in tactical alliances with radical factions.
