Political leaders debate public safety and election law reforms

Political leaders Fikri Ataoğlu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment for the Democratic Party (DP), and Erhan Arıklı, leader of the Yeniden Doğuş Partisi (YDP), have criticized the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) for calling an extraordinary parliamentary meeting regarding security concerns. Ataoğlu argued that public safety should not be a subject of political polemics and suggested a comprehensive evaluation meeting involving all political parties, relevant ministries, the General Directorate of Police, and industry representatives instead.

Ataoğlu cited official data from the General Directorate of Police for the first seven months of 2026, stating that total crime and misdemeanors have decreased continuously for two years, with a drop of over 30 percent compared to 2021. He noted that the crime clearance rate has exceeded 99 percent. He warned that creating a perception of insecurity could damage the country's international image and negatively impact sectors such as tourism, investment, and education.

Separately, the YDP has reversed its decision to boycott a parliamentary committee meeting. While the party initially declined to attend due to uncertainty regarding the election law agenda, they confirmed they will participate on Tuesday. The YDP stated the meeting will focus on their specific demands: the removal of the threshold in elections and allowing party statutes to determine the method for selecting parliamentary candidates.
