Political leaders in Nigeria gathered in Abuja and Benin City for funeral tributes to Chief Dan Orbih, a prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former National Vice Chairman for the South-South region. During a night of tributes, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike honored Orbih, describing him as a selfless ally who played a critical role in Wike’s 2015 gubernatorial victory in Rivers State by resisting financial inducements to withdraw his support.

Separately, political tensions have risen ahead of the 2027 elections. Minister Wike has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, for allegedly making inflammatory remarks regarding supporters of President Bola Tinubu. Wike urged INEC to enforce accountability for political communication to prevent the heightening of public tensions.
