Political leaders in Mexico and Colombia address recent unrest

In Mexico, Morena deputy Gabriela López Torres has challenged an unsigned statement released by the State Congress regarding recent incidents during a plenary session. López Torres claimed the document was not consulted with all legislators and distanced herself from the version alleging that Natalia Castillo Vera aggressed Rita Rodríguez Velázquez. According to the deputy, the confrontation with the state president of Morena was actually initiated by a man who became verbally abusive toward several people present.

In Colombia, Senator Jennifer Pedraza has criticized President Abelardo De La Espriella’s proposal to deploy public security forces into public universities following incidents of violence. Pedraza argued that university campuses should remain spaces for debate rather than battlefields, warning that such measures could stigmatize public education and endanger students and staff. She cited historical precedents of violence during police interventions in universities to argue that authorities should instead focus on identifying specific violent individuals rather than exposing entire academic communities.
