Political nepotism concerns rise in Mexico and Peru
Legislators and journalists are highlighting issues of nepotism and family succession in local government across different regions.
In Puebla, Mexico, Deputy Julio Miguel Huerta Gómez has proposed an initiative to reform the state constitution and the Code of Institutions and Electoral Processes. The proposal aims to prevent political parties from including family members—such as parents, children, spouses, or partners—within the same electoral formula. This measure seeks to ensure that access to public power is not concentrated through family ties and extends the prohibition to all members of municipal governments.
In the Chupa district of the Puno region in Peru, investigations have revealed efforts by Mayor Antonio Machaca Mamani to facilitate the candidacy of his son, Pedro Luis Machaca Condori, for the same mayoral office. The son is running under the Somos Perú party. Additionally, the investigation noted that the son’s list of councilors includes individuals who have served as municipal providers or employees, raising concerns regarding the potential misuse of district budgets to support family-led political continuity.
