Political parties adapt discourse to social media algorithms

Political parties are fundamentally altering their communication styles to align with the mathematical formulas of social media platforms. Rather than using networks solely for propaganda, parties are adapting their language to satisfy algorithms designed to maximize engagement and user retention.

Platform architectures, such as those used by TikTok, Instagram, and X, prioritize high-activation emotions like indignation, fear, and identity-based antagonism. Consequently, complex policy debates and pedagogical narratives are often replaced by fragmented soundbites, rage-baiting, and spectacle. This shift suggests that modern political entities are not fighting the algorithm but cooperating with it, as digital visibility has become a prerequisite for political existence.
