Political scandal survival depends on party support

Political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus of the University of Houston has analyzed five decades of scandals involving presidents, governors, and members of Congress to understand why some politicians survive controversy while others do not.

His research, detailed in the book ‘Scandal: Why Politicians Survive Controversy in a Partisan Era’, suggests that survival depends less on the nature of the allegations and more on the level of support from a politician's own party. If both the party leadership and the voter base remain supportive, politicians can often withstand even severe misconduct. Conversely, a loss of party backing typically results in the end of a political career.
