Political scholar Mikuriya faces backlash for remarks about Prime Minister Takaichi
Political scientist and University of Tokyo professor emeritus Takashi Mikuriya is facing significant criticism following comments made during a broadcast of “Otake Makoto Golden Radio!” on October 29. While discussing the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Mikuriya characterized her leadership style and tendency to work in isolation as “a kind of autism,” stating that she does not listen to the opinions of others.
The remarks triggered immediate backlash on social media, with users condemning the use of a disability to describe political behavior. Following the outcry, announcer Keitaro Sunayama issued an apology on behalf of the program, acknowledging that inappropriate remarks had been made during the guest segment.
Separately, the broadcast featured discussions regarding proposed reductions in the number of Diet members. Critics, including journalist Ri Aoki, argued that such reductions could undermine democratic oversight and favor larger political parties, potentially leading to a more autocratic governing structure.
