Political shifts in Italy and student protests in France
In Italy, political tensions are rising ahead of upcoming elections. Matteo Renzi, leader of Italia Viva, has asserted the strategic importance of his party, claiming he will secure at least 3% of the vote and targeting specific regions like Tuscany, Lazio, and Campania for success. Renzi issued a warning to the “campo largo” allies, suggesting that if the coalition wins by a narrow margin, they may face backlash from more radical elements. He also commented on potential coalition primaries and the political positioning of Carlo Calenda.
Meanwhile, in France, activist Greta Thunberg joined student protesters in Paris. During a demonstration near the Paul-Éluard high school in Saint-Denis, Thunberg criticized the French police, describing them as “extremely violent” and failing to protect youth. She advocated for a convergence of struggles involving climate, labor, and economic issues, stating that young people are being robbed of their future due to a lack of investment in schools. The protests, which have involved students and teachers since September, have seen clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
