Political shifts in Latin American elections
Recent electoral cycles in Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia have demonstrated significant shifts in political power.
In Argentina's 2023 presidential election, Javier Milei of the Libertarian Party won the runoff after initially trailing Sergio Massa of the Frente Renovador. While Massa secured approximately 10 million votes in the first round, Milei ultimately obtained over 14 million votes in the second round, securing a victory for the right-wing Libertarian movement.
In Peru's 2026 elections, Keiko Fujimori of the Fuerza Popular party won the presidency in a narrow second-round victory against Roberto Sánchez of Juntos por el Perú. Both candidates received low vote counts in the first round, with Fujimori eventually securing 9,223,396 votes compared to Sánchez's 9,173,755.
In Bolivia's 2025 elections, Rodrigo Paz of the Christian Democratic Party received 1,717,432 votes in the first round.
