Political shifts in Malaysia and Indonesia as PH and NU hold major assemblies

In Malaysia, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition faces questions regarding its political resilience following recent state election losses in Sabah, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan. Following the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and People's Justice Party (PKR) congresses in August 2026, the DAP has committed to remaining in the Unity Government, with 1,857 delegates voting in favor of the decision. The coalition now faces the challenge of translating its federal presence into grassroots support and fulfilling reform promises ahead of the 16th General Election.

In Indonesia, the 35th Muktamar of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is being held in Jombang from August 27–31, 2026. The event, held at Pondok Pesantren Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas, follows calls from senior clerics at Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo to maintain the organization's dignity and avoid internal disputes. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend the opening of the Muktamar.
