Political shifts in Paraguay and energy reform debates in Honduras

In Paraguay, Liberal Party Senator Éver Villalba has called for the opposition to focus on building a comprehensive political project and concrete proposals rather than rushing to select candidates for the 2028 presidential election. Villalba emphasized that unity must serve the purpose of governing and transforming the country, not just winning an election. Several figures have already expressed presidential aspirations, including Ricardo Estigarribia, Miguel del Prieto, Kattya González, Eduardo Nakayama, and Celeste Amarilla. Meanwhile, Senator Nakayama reported facing internal opposition campaigns, which he described as ‘friendly fire,’ but reaffirmed his intent to continue his candidacy.

In Honduras, Héctor Corrales, a commissioner for the Electric Energy Regulatory Commission (CREE), stated that the Liberal Party is conditioning its support for energy reforms on the granting of tax exemptions for specific sectors. Corrales noted that the party's counterproposal runs parallel to the Executive branch's plan, with the intention of having both approved simultaneously. Corrales warned that simultaneous approval could lead to favoritism toward certain technologies and argued that exemptions should be handled through separate processes after reforms are passed. He also noted that debt forgiveness in the electricity sector would require input from the Secretariat of Finance due to economic implications.
