Political tensions emerge in Malawi and Sierra Leone

In Malawi, supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are expressing growing dissatisfaction with the party’s current direction. Grassroots members have called for a return to the unity, discipline, and accountability that originally defined the party, warning that internal political battles are overshadowing the need to address national issues such as economic instability, unemployment, and the rising cost of living.

In Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) is working to address concerns among its base following the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma. Koroma returned to the country on September 6, 2026, after spending over two years in Nigeria, following the government's decision to drop treason charges related to the November 2023 attempted coup. While the government and ECOWAS have framed his return as a step toward national reconciliation, SLPP Publicity Secretary Moses Mambu noted that the party must engage its supporters to manage potential trauma and tension stemming from the 2023 unrest.
