Tirana protests escalate as demonstrators target government buildings

Violent protests in Tirana, Albania, have escalated as students and citizens demand government reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The demonstrations, which began over university conditions and corruption, have turned into widespread civil unrest involving clashes between protesters and riot police.

During the unrest, several government buildings, including the Ministry of Education, were partially burned or damaged. Protesters also targeted banks and private businesses, using stones, fireworks, and Molotov cocktails. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Reports indicate that at least 51 police officers were injured, and dozens of protesters have received medical attention, though the Ministry of Health stated those injured are currently out of life-threatening danger.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has refused to step down, asserting that his mandate was granted through democratic elections. Opposition leader Sali Berisha has expressed support for the student movement, calling for immediate government change. The European Union has expressed concern over the escalation of violence and has called for all parties to reduce tensions and engage in constructive dialogue.
