Political tensions rise in KwaZulu-Natal over competing events
Political tensions have escalated in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, following a dispute over scheduled events involving the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and cultural activist Ngizwe Mchunu. The EFF planned a provincial local government election manifesto launch at the JL Dube Stadium, while Mchunu scheduled a Maskandi cultural celebration at the Dube Village Sports Field, located approximately 4km away.
Zwakele Mncwango, provincial chairwoman of ActionSA, criticized the EFF for attempting to designate the area as a “no-go zone,” arguing that the venues are sufficiently separated to allow both events to proceed peacefully. Mncwango warned that such territorial disputes undermine democratic coexistence and strain local law enforcement.
EFF Secretary-General Marshall Dlamini dismissed claims of restricted areas, stating the party intends to campaign freely across all wards in KwaZulu-Natal to rebuild support. Conversely, Ngizwe Mchunu accused EFF leader Julius Malema of disrespecting the region, characterizing his political presence as infrequent and disconnected from local concerns.
