Political tensions rise in Malawi and Samoa

In Malawi, a standoff between the Executive and the Legislature is threatening the upcoming mid-year budget review meeting. The dispute stems from Speaker Sameer Suleman’s decision to establish ad hoc parliamentary committees to investigate national issues. Political leaders, including United Democratic Front chief whip Ismail Rizzq Mkumba and Malawi Congress Party chief whip Moses Kunkuyu, have called for dialogue to protect Parliament’s oversight role and ensure that budgetary deliberations are not disrupted by institutional divisions.

In Samoa, tensions emerged during the opening of Parliament’s October session. Prime Minister La’auli faced criticism following a confrontation with Hon. Lealailepule regarding the delegation of authority to Ministry Chief Executive Officers. The dispute centered on the roles and accountability of these officials, with critics suggesting the Prime Minister’s reaction to questions about management principles reflected an unwillingness to accept parliamentary scrutiny.
