Ukrainian national detained in Bucharest suspected of Russian sabotage ties

Authorities in Romania have detained a 24-year-old Ukrainian national suspected of being part of a Russian-controlled sabotage network. Investigators believe the individual is linked to an investigation involving an arms and ammunition cache discovered near Berlin.

According to reports citing German magazine Der Spiegel and Romanian intelligence services, the suspect traveled from Poland to Berlin via bus, where he allegedly retrieved two packages containing handguns from a roadside in eastern Berlin. These weapons were reportedly hidden in an underground storage space near a lake in southeastern Berlin.

The suspect and another Ukrainian national were subsequently detained in Bucharest. They are suspected of using the courier service Nova Post to ship packages containing incendiary devices. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the involvement of foreign powers cannot be ruled out, describing the suspect as a “lower-ranking agent” who may lack full knowledge of the command chain.
