Taiwan local election polls show tight races in Taoyuan and Taipei
Recent political polls and public discourse in Taiwan highlight shifting dynamics in upcoming local elections. In Taoyuan, current Mayor Chang Shan-cheng holds a high administrative satisfaction rating of 58.2%. However, a comparative survey shows that 44.8% of citizens believe former Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan performed better, while only 30% favor Chang’s administration.
In Taipei, a poll indicates a tight race for the mayoralty. Chiang Wan-an leads with 41.7% support, closely followed by Shen Po-yang at 40.5%. The data shows a generational divide, with voters over 50 leaning toward Chiang and those aged 20 to 49 favoring Shen.
Meanwhile, political tensions have escalated following a controversy involving the restaurant brand Beard Papa’s (Hu Shu Zhang). After a representative expressed support for Chiang Wan-an, the brand faced online backlash. Taichung Mayor Lu Chiu-yen defended the right to political expression, stating that individuals should not face online attacks for their political stances, warning against the regression of democratic values.
