Polizeischule Ostschweiz provides regional police training
The Police School of Eastern Switzerland (PSO) in Amriswil serves as the competence center for basic police training within the Eastern Swiss Police Concordat. The institution is supported by the Swiss cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Graubünden, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, and Thurgau, as well as the cities of Chur and St. Gallen and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
Each year, the school conducts a training program for approximately 90 students divided into four classes. The two-year basic training begins in October, during which students are already employed and paid by their respective police corps. The first year is spent primarily at the school, including an eight-week internship, while the second year takes place within the student's home police force to integrate academic learning with practical daily operations.
The curriculum includes general education, law, criminology, traffic, and health, with a heavy emphasis on security and operational training. Following the Swiss Police Institute's training plan, the PSO utilizes a competency-oriented approach focused on real-world situational training and the role of police within a democratic state.
