Polizeisteg bridge at Alte Donau to undergo renovation
The Polizeisteg pedestrian bridge at the Alte Donau in Vienna's Donaustadt district is scheduled for renovation starting this September. The 35-year-old wooden structure, which connects Kaisermühlen to the small Gänsehäufel, will be replaced due to signs of wear.
According to Wolfgang Strenn, head of MA 29 (Bridge Construction), the new 133-meter-long bridge will feature a steel framework for increased durability and maintenance efficiency, while retaining wooden elements for the floor and railings. The new construction will also be wider, increasing from 2.18 meters to 3 meters, and will include seven light masts to improve safety during dark months.
To maintain pedestrian access during construction, a floating replacement bridge will be deployed. The new permanent structure is expected to be completed by April 2027. During the construction period, boats will be unable to cross the affected section of the Alte Donau.
