Polkadot launches decentralized dotUSD stablecoin amid DOT price decline

Polkadot has officially launched dotUSD, a native stablecoin governed by the DOT DAO through its OpenGov framework. Unlike many existing stablecoins, dotUSD is designed to have no single issuing company or central point of control, functioning instead as a decentralized asset within the Polkadot ecosystem.

The launch coincides with significant volatility for the native DOT token. DOT has experienced a price decline, dropping from approximately $1.21 to around $1.10. Market data indicates that the sell-off was partly driven by the liquidation of leveraged positions in the futures market, as evidenced by a decrease in open interest and a shift to negative funding rates.

While the token faces short-term downward pressure, the introduction of dotUSD aims to provide increased liquidity for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and on-chain financial activity on the network. The governance proposal for the stablecoin, which included the creation of a DOT/dotUSD liquidity pool, was approved with a 98.4% majority.
