Pollica commemorates former mayor Angelo Vassallo
Authorities and community members in Pollica are commemorating Angelo Vassallo, the former mayor known as the ‘sindaco pescatore’ (fisherman mayor), who was killed 16 years ago on September 5, 2010.
Vassallo served three terms as mayor of Pollica and was a prominent environmentalist. He also served as the president of the advisory body for the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni National Park. He was a key figure in the efforts to have the Mediterranean diet recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a designation approved in November 2010.
The commemoration includes a memorial mass in Acciaroli, a ceremony at the Arena del Mare involving the laying of a laurel wreath, and a series of discussions titled ‘Dialogues for Inhabiting the Future’ focused on community sustainability and territorial identity.
