Pollino National Park features rare Pino Loricato and historic San Sosti
The Pollino National Park in Calabria, Italy, serves as a vital sanctuary for unique biodiversity, most notably the Pino Loricato. This rare pine tree, characterized by its thick, segmented grey-brown bark resembling Roman armor, grows at altitudes between 530 and 2,240 meters. Despite its status as a natural monument, the species faces extinction risks due to fragmented populations and environmental stressors like wind and ice.
Within the park, the town of San Sosti acts as a southern gateway, offering a blend of historical and natural attractions. The area features significant sites including the Sanctuary-basilica of Madonna del Pettoruto, the Byzantine citadel of Artemisia, and various archaeological and religious landmarks. The region is a destination for hiking and nature exploration, centered around the high peaks of the Pollino massif.
