POLREGIO invests in GSM-R railway safety systems

Polish passenger carrier POLREGIO has signed contracts worth over 5 million PLN to equip 34 electric vehicles with the GSM-R digital radio communication system. This technology is a key component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), facilitating secure voice communication between drivers and traffic controllers. Currently, nearly 500 units—approximately 77% of the fleet—are already equipped with this system. The installation work will be carried out by contractors Pyrylandia and Radionika, with the full scope expected to be completed within two months.

Separately, railway safety monitoring in Poland is increasing through expanded surveillance. PKP currently monitors over 2,800 railway crossings via video surveillance, cooperating closely with the police to document dangerous road situations. Additionally, the CANARD automatic traffic surveillance system, which tracks red-light violations at crossings, has expanded to ten locations. In the first half of 2026, these RedLight systems recorded 3,100 violations. Drivers facing penalties for running red lights at crossings risk fines of 2,000 PLN and 15 penalty points, which can double for repeat offenders.
