Polymarket bank failure bets prompt UK regulatory scrutiny
Regulators in the UK and Europe are examining the risks posed by prediction markets after the platform Polymarket facilitated over $77,000 in wagers regarding the potential failure of major global lenders by 2026. The contracts include prominent institutions such as HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, JPMorgan Chase, BNP Paribas, and Deutsche Bank.
UK Liberal Democrat MP Bobby Dean has urged authorities to intervene, expressing concerns that the platform’s reputation for failing to prevent insider trading could allow bad actors to exploit market sentiment and potentially trigger bank runs. While Polymarket restricts users in the UK, US, Canada, and the EU, individuals in approximately 150 other countries can access the offshore platform.
The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has confirmed it is communicating with international regulators to protect market integrity. Meanwhile, the European Securities and Markets Authority has warned that prediction markets utilizing distributed ledger technology face heightened risks of market manipulation and insider trading.
