Polymarket faces $10 million fraud attempt and security flaws

Polymarket, a major prediction market platform, has faced significant security and compliance challenges, including a $10 million attempted fraud scheme in February. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, fraudsters used stolen debit cards to attempt massive transactions, with the payment processor Checkout.com at one point rejecting over 80% of deposits as fraudulent.

Internal reports suggest that CEO Shayne Coplan prioritized platform growth over immediate regulatory compliance, allegedly telling staff to focus on expansion and deal with potential fines later. This period of instability saw several high-level departures, including the Chief Compliance Officer for the US division and the US CEO.

In July, a separate security vulnerability allowed attackers to access existing user accounts using stolen personal information, such as Social Security numbers, without needing passwords. While the company stated it would compensate users for losses from this incident, some users reported significant financial damages. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is currently investigating the platform's activities.
