Polymarket seeks financial product status in Europe and UK
Polymarket is actively lobbying regulators in the European Union and the United Kingdom to have its event contracts classified as financial products rather than gambling. The New York-based platform is engaging with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the European Commission, and the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to seek a regulatory pathway under frameworks like MiFID.
The company argues that its contracts function similarly to derivatives. However, regulators face a complex challenge: while some contracts, such as those tied to interest rates, resemble financial instruments, others, like those involving sports or elections, may fall under national gambling laws. In the UK, the FCA currently views prediction markets based on non-financial events as subject to gambling oversight, and financial event contracts are often treated as binary options, which are restricted for retail consumers.
In a separate commercial move, Polymarket has entered a significant promotional partnership with LeBron James. The athlete will serve as a brand ambassador to promote prediction markets, specifically focusing on American football, in an effort to expand the platform's reach.
