Polyphagous shot-hole borer threatens global forests and economies

The polyphagous shot-hole borer, an invasive beetle species originating from Southeast Asia, is spreading across all continents except Antarctica, threatening global tree populations and economies.

Smaller than a sesame seed, the beetle bores into tree trunks to reproduce, carrying a fungus that causes Fusarium dieback. This fungus blocks the tree's vascular system, preventing water and nutrient flow, which often leads to tree death within a year. The species is particularly difficult to control because females can reproduce without mating and the insects easily travel via timber, live plants, and packaging materials.

In South Africa, the impact has been severe, particularly in Stellenbosch, where many ancient oak trees have been lost. Experts estimate the economic impact in South Africa could reach $18.5 billion over the next decade. Globally, the financial damage is expected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars.

In Turkey, the beetle has been detected in Istanbul. The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization has classified the situation in Turkey as 'current, not widespread and under official control,' with ongoing efforts to manage the local infestation.
