Polyphenol-rich foods linked to healthier brain aging in new scientific review
Researchers at Semmelweis University have compiled a comprehensive review, published in the journal Nutrients, that examines evidence from laboratory, animal, population and clinical studies on plant compounds called polyphenols. The review finds that polyphenols—abundant in berries, green tea, cocoa, coffee, extra‑virgin olive oil, fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs and spices—may support healthy brain aging and could slow biological changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Their antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory actions are thought to protect nerve cells, reduce free‑radical damage, improve neuronal communication and activate brain repair mechanisms. The authors also highlight the Mediterranean and MIND dietary patterns, which naturally include high amounts of polyphenol‑rich foods, as dietary models that may promote brain health. An additional focus is the role of the gut microbiome, which transforms many polyphenols into metabolites that may further influence inflammation and brain function. While no single food can prevent Alzheimer’s, the review suggests that long‑term dietary habits rich in polyphenols could contribute to healthier brain aging.
