Polyphenol-rich foods may slow brain aging
A review of scientific studies published in the journal Nutrients suggests that a diet rich in polyphenols may help slow brain aging and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Polyphenols are natural plant compounds found in foods including berries, green tea, coffee, cocoa, and extra virgin olive oil. Research indicates these compounds may protect brain cells from damage caused by aging by addressing chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and reduced cellular energy production.
Dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet and the MIND diet, which emphasize these polyphenol-rich foods, are associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline. While experts note that further clinical studies in humans are required, current data suggests these plant components work synergistically to protect cognitive function.
