Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre launches soil regeneration project
The Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (UPP) is implementing the coverPLUS project to regenerate agricultural soils in the Alentejo region. Running until August 2028, the initiative aims to improve resource efficiency and support the adoption of digital technologies among farmers.
Coordinated by Professor Luís Alcino da Conceição, the project focuses on soil management practices such as cover cropping and organic fertilization to increase organic matter, improve soil structure, and enhance water and nutrient retention. These measures are intended to help crops better withstand the effects of climate change.
Technological advancements include the development of a 3D digital twin model to predict forage production and monitor soil conditions. Additionally, the project features a digital training program to modernize the agricultural sector through practical technical support. The initiative is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the ALT2030 program, covering 85% of the eligible investment.
