Pomas school relocated following tornado damage

Following a devastating tornado in Pomas, located in the Aude department of France, the local school has been heavily damaged and will be unable to host students for the start of the school year on September 1, 2026.

To accommodate the 90 affected students, Carcassonne Agglo has arranged for them to be relocated to the Bastide de Madame leisure center in the nearby village of Couffoulens. Régis Banquet, president of Carcassonne Agglo, stated that the decision to group all students at a single site was made to prevent siblings from being separated and to ensure a more peaceful transition for the children.

The temporary school setup will include transportation via two buses running between Pomas and Couffoulens, with students supervised from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Local officials, including Pomas Mayor Hervé Giné, noted the sensitivity of the situation, as some children have already been directly impacted by the disaster, including the loss of their homes.
