Pomorie to establish Bulgaria’s first geopark

Pomorie has introduced a project to establish Bulgaria’s first geopark, a concept designed to integrate natural and cultural-historical sites into a unified tourism product. Developed by the Local Initiative Group ‘Pomorie’, the project aims to boost tourism and create new opportunities for local businesses.

The proposed geopark will cover the entire Pomorie municipality and the area around the village of Golitsa in the Dolni Chiflik municipality. Mayor Ivan Aleksiev stated that the project will seek inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The structure of the geopark will be managed by the Regional Historical Museum in Pomorie.

Key sites included in the concept are three paleovulcanoes in the regions of Dabnik, Kableshkovo, and Kamenar, the Pomorie Lagoon, Pomorie Lake, saltworks, and medicinal mud deposits. The plan also includes the Kozichino area, which contains geological traces from approximately 66 million years ago related to the mass extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. The sites will be connected via thematic routes, such as the ‘Fire Land’ route linking the paleovulcanoes, supported by visitor centers, audio guides, and educational materials.
