Pompeii Archaeological Park custodian arrested for sexual assault

A 58-year-old custodian of the Pompeii Archaeological Park has been arrested in Scafati on charges of aggravated sexual violence. The incident occurred on the morning of August 16, 2026, involving a 17-year-old student from Padua who was visiting the site.

According to investigators, the suspect allegedly used his official uniform to pose as a tour guide, luring the teenager into the 'Casa dei Giardini di Ercole', a domus typically closed to the public. Once inside, the man is accused of physically assaulting the victim despite his resistance. The victim reported the incident to the Carabinieri immediately after the attack.

Authorities used surveillance camera footage from within the archaeological park to identify the suspect and corroborate the victim's detailed account. The judge ordered the suspect's detention in the Vallo della Lucania prison, citing the severity of the conduct and a significant risk of reoffending. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, expressed condolences to the victim and stated that the park is cooperating fully with the ongoing criminal and disciplinary investigations.
