Pompeii unveils new scientific reconstruction of Polykleitos Canon

The Pompeii Archaeological Park has unveiled a new scientific bronze reconstruction of the Canon of Polykleitos, a seminal work of classical Greek sculpture. Presented on August 3, 2026, the project aims to provide a more accurate representation of the ancient ideal of human proportion and harmony.

This reconstruction differs from previous versions through its use of polychromy, reflecting the historical reality that classical statues were colored rather than plain white. Additionally, archaeological research suggests the figure held a javelin (akontion) rather than a spear (dory), potentially distinguishing the Canon from the famous Doryphoros.

The reconstruction utilized two distinct models: a marble statue found in the Sannitic Gymnasium in Pompeii for the body, and a high-quality bronze bust from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum for the head. The project was supported by the acquisition of the former Chiurazzi Foundry collection, a historic Neapolitan foundry, through the exercise of the right of first refusal.
