Ponferrada data center project faces environmental criticism

The environmental association Bierzo Aire Limpio has raised concerns regarding the proposed Compostilla Data Center project in Ponferrada, Spain. The project, promoted by Data Center Ponferrada, S. L. (linked to the Lamelas Viloria group), is being criticized for a perceived lack of transparency in its 428-page documentation.

Key points of contention include the absence of specific data regarding water consumption, energy requirements, noise levels, and emissions. The association also noted a lack of clarity concerning the actual employment benefits and investment details promised by the developer. Furthermore, Bierzo Aire Limpio expressed concern that the promoter claims the facility does not require an environmental impact assessment, arguing that only the competent administration can determine the necessary legal controls.

The group highlighted that data centers are part of an international debate due to their high energy and cooling demands, which can impact air quality and water resources. They noted that similar concerns have led to restrictions and moratoria on such facilities in the United States.
