Pongpet Suspension Bridge in Pangandaran fails after inauguration

The Pongpet Suspension Bridge in Margacinta Village, Pangandaran, experienced a structural failure on Sunday, August 30, 2026, shortly after its official inauguration. The incident occurred as a group of approximately 50 people, including Pangandaran Regent Citra Pitriyami, local officials, and residents, were crossing the bridge.

Reports indicate that a steel sling on one side of the bridge detached from its main anchor system, causing the structure to tilt or sag significantly. While some reports described the bridge as having collapsed, the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) clarified that the main structure remained intact, but the detachment of the sling caused the bridge to become unstable and unusable.

No fatalities were reported, though several individuals, including the Head of the Public Works Department, sustained minor injuries or shock. The TNI AD stated that the incident was likely caused by an overload, as the number of people crossing simultaneously exceeded the recommended capacity of three people or one motorcycle at a time. The bridge has been closed temporarily for repairs and technical evaluation.
