Ponorogo, Indonesia Grapples with Forest Fire and Severe Water Shortage

A forest fire broke out on July 25 in the Bukit Angel area of Ponorogo, scorching an estimated one to three hectares of Perhutani‑owned forest. Residents reported that the blaze, fed by dry vegetation and strong winds, spread quickly and that no fire‑fighting personnel were present to contain it, prompting calls for immediate intervention by the company and local disaster agencies.

At the same time, the region’s drought is intensifying. The local disaster management agency (BPBD) has logged two water‑crisis reports: one from SMAN 1 Jenangan school, which regularly faces water shortages each dry season, and another affecting 153 residents in the Dukuh Bungur hamlet of Desa Munggu. BPBD officials are conducting assessments and preparing to drop clean water supplies, with the first drops expected within the week.

Both incidents highlight the growing strain of extreme weather on Ponorogo’s environment and community services, with authorities urged to respond swiftly to prevent further damage and hardship.
