Ponte JK to implement experimental reversible lane system
Starting Wednesday, October 21, the Ponte JK in Brasília will begin an experimental traffic operation on the Estrada Parque Juscelino Kubitschek (EPJK/DF-027). Between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, the road will feature five lanes heading toward Plano Piloto to alleviate morning congestion.
The configuration will utilize the three standard lanes plus two lanes from the opposing direction used as temporary counterflow. The Department of Roads of the Federal District (DER-DF) projects this measure could increase traffic capacity in that direction by more than 50%.
Infrastructure adjustments began in mid-October, involving the opening of crossings in the central median, access adjustments, and the installation of new signaling and control mechanisms. The operation will be managed through an integrated effort between DER-DF, the Department of Traffic (Detran-DF), and the Military Police (PMDF).
While the measure aims to assist commuters from areas such as Jardim Botânico and São Sebastião, local community groups have noted that the reversible lane may not resolve all congestion points, specifically citing traffic lights and pedestrian crossings on the DF-001.
