Ponte Vecchio undergoes major conservation restoration in Florence
The Florence Municipality has launched a major comprehensive conservation restoration project for the historic Ponte Vecchio. This systematic intervention, which began on May 25, 2026, is described by local authorities as the first large-scale conservative restoration of its kind for the monument.
The project prioritizes sections of the bridge in direct contact with the Arno River. Using floating pontoons to work from within the riverbed, crews are addressing the piers, abutments, and cutwaters. This approach aims to mitigate damage caused by water, humidity, river flooding, and cumulative atmospheric effects.
While some reports have suggested a simultaneous restoration of three historic bridges on the Arno, official information confirms the current phased project is specifically focused on the Ponte Vecchio.
