Pontedera and Boca Juniors form symbolic bond through unexpected friendship

An unexpected friendship between an Argentine retiree and an Italian football official has created a symbolic bond between the city of Pontedera and the Argentine club Boca Juniors.

The connection began in 2022 when Oscar Magnifico, a 72-year-old retired history professor from Buenos Aires, met Lorenzo Puccini, then a linesman in Serie D, at a restaurant in Pontedera. The two bonded after Puccini used his Spanish skills to help Magnifico navigate a menu. As a lifelong member of Boca Juniors, Magnifico exchanged club pennants with Puccini, establishing a symbolic link between the Italian city and the major Argentine football institution.

Upon Magnifico's return to Pontedera, the two renewed their friendship through various local meals and gatherings. Magnifico has since extended an invitation to Puccini to visit Argentina, with a planned visit to the Bombonera stadium.
