Portugal State acquires 13.7% stake in REN from Amancio Ortega

The Portuguese State has officially re-entered the capital of Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), the country's electricity and gas grid operator. Through the state holding company Parpública, the government acquired a 13.7% stake from Pontegadea Inversiones, the investment vehicle of Amancio Ortega. While the official transaction value was not disclosed, Portuguese media reports estimate the deal at approximately 380 million euros.

The acquisition received the necessary approval from the Court of Auditors (Tribunal de Contas) on August 31. This move marks the return of public capital to the operator after at least a decade of private ownership. Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that the state's participation is a strategic tool to influence the energy sector, accelerate renewable energy investments, and potentially help lower electricity prices.

Following the sale, Pontegadea Inversiones no longer holds any voting rights or qualified participation in REN. China State Grid remains the largest shareholder in the company, maintaining a 25% stake.

In a separate matter, Minister Carvalho also addressed a dispute regarding water rights in Sines, asserting that the water intake previously used by an EDP thermal plant is state property and has been legitimately transferred to the public company Águas de Santo André.
